It's the unofficial kick-off to summer - Memorial Day Weekend. For many, it is a time to remember all the service men and women who have fought and died for this country.  For others, it's a time for family and picnics, with the promise of warmer weather.  If you like heat... Memorial Day Weekend 2014 did not disappoint.

Duluth tied two records this past weekend. According to the National Weather Service, the official temperature on Saturday, May 24 was 84 degrees.  May 24th has not been that warm since 1875.  People flocked to Park Point to cool off, and take photos of the ice formations still floating in the lake.

On Memorial Day, Duluth tied the record again, set back in 1978.  The mercury reached a hot 85 degrees!  Looking through the official NWS climate data, the heat went all the way up to the Canadian Border. International Falls reached 88 degrees on Saturday and 87 degrees on Sunday, giving bragging rights for warmth to Northern Minnesota. Duluth was roughly 5 degrees warmer than the official Minneapolis temperature and International Falls had them beat by 5-10 degrees.

Did you like the hot forecast?  We received varying opinions regarding the heat on the WDIO Facebook page and emails from viewers.

Jamie F. posted on Facebook, "Everyone loves the meteorologist now, unlike a few months ago! Really enjoying the beautiful weekend!"

Bonnie K. said, "Thank you Justin for the nice weather we are having. Thought you would like an attaboy after this crazy year."

Another viewer pointed out how dangerous the heat can be for some.  "Thank God for the AC or we'd be toast. I know weather isn't a perfect science, but at least call it what it is, and that's hot!" Tim and Marie said in an email. "I'd trade 12 inches of snow for what we've experienced that last three days in a heart beat!"

So whether you like the hot temperatures, or stay close to the air conditioning, the stats do not lie.  This was one of the warmest Memorial Day weekends on record.
