Hibbing Raceway Officially Transferred

The Hibbing Raceway is getting prepared to open the 2014. Racing officials know that it will be the start of a new era.

That's because the track has been officially transferred from St. Louis County, to the city of Hibbing.

There was a ceremonial flag waving ceremony at the grandstand on Thursday. County Commissioner Steve Raukar waved the checkered flag, and Mayor Rick Cannata waved the green start one.

Rudy Aho, the president of Iron Range Racing Association, said that they have enjoyed working with the county. But they're also excited to be working with the city. 

"We are already in discussions about what new programs we can bring to the track, to not only help the racers, but the community as well," Aho said.

Along with the transfer, came $250,000, which will be used to make improvements at the site.

Hibbing has a long history of racing, dating back to 1906, according to Steve Raukar.

The season starts this Saturday, with 5 classes of cars and bus rides for the kids.
