Students across the Northland are gearing up for graduation, but two seniors from Superior High School are tuning up a unique final project, a custom built motorcycle.

The students unveiled their Spartan Bike Build at The Kitchen in Superior Tuesday evening. Building a motorcycle from scratch was something Phil Runser never imagined he would do.

“It's kind of a sense of pride for me because coming in I had no idea how to do any of this. Personally, the closest I've ever done is hammer a nail into a board,” Runser said.

But that changed fast. Runser can now weld and do a paint job. He said mentors from local businesses like Len's Auto Body and Big Lake Cycle passed on their skills .

Service Manager Patrick Zambori said working with students for the second Spartan Bike Build was rewarding.

“Seeing them get their feet wet in some possible career opportunities and maybe even something they can put on a resume when they get out of high school,” Zambori said.

The seniors put over 100 hours of work into the project, and Erick Anderson said he learned more than just technical skills.

“The ability to improvise because a lot of times when you're doing this the parts don't actually fit the way they do in the video, and you kind of have to think of a solution right on the spot,” Anderson said.

He expects to get an A on the project, and the students thanked local supporters at the unveiling. The expensive build wouldn't have been possible without donations from local businesses.

The Spartan Build will continue with a gift from the Superior Police Department. A decommissioned cruiser will help five seniors rev up a hot rod next year.

The Spartan Build graduating class hopes the project can become a tradition for students at Superior High School

“I had a lot of fun with this, and I'm really glad I did it so I hope they have fun with it,” Anderson said.

The polished bike will be auctioned off this Saturday at the Twin Ports Motorcycle Expo at the Duluth Heritage Sports Center. The sale will help fund next year's build.
