Duluth City Councilors have voted to accept a grant that will help build a cross-city trail.

Councilors voted 8-1 Monday night to accept a $288,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. According to city documents, it will help build a 10-foot wide trail from 24th to 37th Avenues West.

But the trail isn’t supported by everyone. Just last week, Irving Neighborhood community members put a petition together with 83 signatures on it to get the trail re-routed away from where they live. They’re concerned plans call for removing some sidewalks and cutting down almost 30 trees.

Also in Monday’s city council meeting, councilors approved a resolution calling for driving lane changes on part of London Road. According to the resolution, between 12th and 21st Avenues East, four driving lanes will be reduced to two. It says a left turn lane will be added in the center of the road, as well as a bike lane in either direction.

Changes are expected to be made this summer.
