Students at Denfeld High School are diverse, but they proved they are all Hunters as over 1,000 students came together to make an elaborate music video full of school spirit.
It's always a good time at Denfeld, and students have the video to prove it. Every student was invited to be a cast member in a video where they lip synched Carly Rae Jepsen's hit song “Good Time”.
The students gathered on Monday afternoon to watch the final cut, but it started with two students in the Rotary Club. Seniors McKenzie Thomas and Kelsey Soderberg organized the production to change the way people see Denfeld.
“We seem like we have kind of a bad reputation, I hate to say it, but we wanted to show that we're here, we are proud to be a Denfeld Hunter,” Thomas said.
It took years to overcome the merging of the Denfeld and Central high schools according to Soderberg.
“Especially, when we were freshmen it was the year we merged together so it was like the Central kids would hang out with the Central kids and the Denfeld kids would hang out with the Denfeld kids and they didn't really come together,” Soderberg said.
She said the video is making every student a Hunter and school counselor Jenny Wellnitz was proud of every one of them.
“We have a lot here, and we've got a lot of incredible kids. We've got a lot of kids from different areas and different neighborhoods and different walks of life but at the end of the day they're all Denfeld Hunters. They're all one,” Wellnitz said.
The project brought together the Rotary Club, sports teams, the National Honor Society and many other groups in the school, and the students said seven months of hard work paid off.
“It's a lot of hard work with the practices and stuff, but it was so cool to see our plan from the beginning of the year, like September, to see it come out right now and have everyone see it is so cool,” Thomas said.
Denfeld students were excited, but they'll have to do something amazing to top the video next year.
“We're leaving them with something that can become a tradition to unify the school every single year,” Soderberg said.
Every student also got a Denfeld pride t-shirt to wear for the video. That was possible because students secured donations from Maurices and other local groups.
