Melting snowbanks are revealing an ugly problem underneath. Trash is appearing on the sides of some Duluth streets.
Pop cans, plastic, bottles and bags littered the shoulders of 3rd Street near 10th Avenue West Friday morning.
Maintenance Operations Manager Kelly Fleissner tells Eyewitness News that the late-running winter is the reason they’re not being cleaned up already.
At the Fleet Services building in West Duluth, city workers prepared two of the seven street sweepers. Fleissner said they will likely start sweeping streets the week of April 21, picking up dirt, sand and much of the trash. He said they would like to start earlier, but can’t because of colder temperatures in the forecast.
“A critical part of sweeping operation is to pre-wet the sand so we're not spreading dust all over the community,” Fleissner said.
If the temperatures are too cold, the pre-wet sand turns into a big chunk of ice.
Fleissner said after sweeping work begins, it will likely take a couple of months to finish.
