For many of us, this winter could best be described as brutal... cold that is. If you felt that way, you wouldn't be wrong.
The climatological winter includes the months of December, January and February. Duluth just experienced its 2nd most coldest winter ever recorded. It was also the coldest winter since 1874/75. According to the National Weather Service, the average temperature in Duluth this season was 3.9 degrees. This period included 65 days of below zero temperatures, which is a new record. The old records were set in 1958/59 and 1874/75 with 59 days below zero.
This years' Duluth climatological winter will go down as the 6th most snowiest, which may not sound that impressive. Especially if you were the one out shoveling the heavy, white stuff.
The StormTeam thought it might be fun to compare our snowfall totals (so far) to that of last year. We have broken down the stats to include the months of October - April.
Totals provided by the National Weather Service Archives.
|October, 2013||0.3"||October, 2012||1.1"|
|November, 2013||4.7"||November, 2012||10.1"|
|December, 2013||39.9"||December, 2012||13.2"|
|January, 2014||9.4"||January, 2013||9.2"|
|February, 2014||29.5"||February, 2013||19.1"|
|Totals:||83.8" (so far)||129.3"|
Many Northlanders remember the late season winter storms... in Spring of last year. Interestingly, if our math is correct and you subtract our heavy snowfall in March and April of 2013... Duluth received 52.7" of snow. We are already 30 inches above that mark this season. For what it's worth, the record snowfall in Duluth is 135.4" set back in 1995/96. Average snowfall is 83.1." At least we can say we are above average.
Will we have a repeat of last spring? It looks like we will have to wait and see.
