Early afternoon was the calm before the storm. An hour later, the snow was blowing.
In anticipation, John Radosevich got his plow fixed-up on Wednesday. He's been busy moving snow.
"We're pushing it back to gain some room. We are anticipating that if we get this big snow storm we are going to need it," said Radosevich.
Even though gas prices jumped nearly 15 cents earlier in the day, Radosevich was one of the many drivers filling up their tanks before the storm.
"I cleaned up my snowboard, made sure I got gas in my car, got food and everything, so I think I'm okay," said Tucker Lindberg of Duluth.
One group of friends was heading to Michigan to snowboard.
"It just lined up so perfectly...we are excited to get like 20 inches up there," said Chris Potter.
But getting there may have been tough.
Roads across the Northland quickly lost traction over the evening. In Duluth, cars were at a standstill headed up Mesaba Avenure.
The plows, however, were out in full force. MnDOT said all of their trucks were out on the road, and they're ready for 24/7 coverage. Their plan is to focus on plowing and then later de-ice.
Transportation officials continue to remind drivers to take it slow and steady if travel is absolutely necessary.
