A DFL candidate running for the open Minnesota House District 7A seat met with the public on Saturday.

Pete Johnson held a meet-and-greet at Chester Creek Cafe. Johnson has the endorsement of former City Council president and newly-elected St. Louis County Commissioner Patrick Boyle.

Johnson said his campaign will focus on affordable and accessible health care, and education issues like the achievement gap and college debt. Johnson is a captain with the Duluth Fire Department, and he has been active in the local DFL party.

"As a firefighter we're invited into people's homes and asked to help them out, and there are so many things that we can't do as firefighters," Johnson said on Saturday. "And to be able to serve in the legislature, for me, is an extension of that service and allows me to make a difference before they have to call 911 for help."

Johnson will be taking on fellow DFL candidates Linda Krug and Gary Anderson, as well as Republican Donna Bergstrom. They're fighting for the seat held by the retiring Tom Huntley.
