Near Tofte, Minn. - They say it can be harder to defend a title than it is to win one and Nathan Schroeder from Chisholm has had his work cut out for himself as he looks for back-to-back Beargrease Marathon titles.

Schroeder is a two-time champion, winning in 2010 and last year and he reach the Sawbill checkpoint near Tofte first at about 4:30 Tuesday afternoon and then, departed for the Finland checkpoint around eight p.m. with quite a journey ahead of him as he told Eyewitness Sports he hopes to get all the way to Two Harbors by 4:30 Wednesday morning.

According to the Beargrease Website, Schroeder still has 10 dogs running. At Sawbill, he talked with Eyewitness Sports about the status of his dogs, saying they were doing well.

"They are doing pretty good, some swollen wrists, but we are working on that right now, a little icing and a little massaging and they'll come down and they will be ready," says Schroeder.

As of 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday night, organizers told Eyewitness Sports that Schroeder had a lead of about 40 minutes on Keith Aili of Ray. The estimated time for the first place musher to cross over the finish line on Wednesday is about 10:30 a.m.
