Frostbitten UMD Student Undergoes Second Surgery

Created: 01/21/2014 10:50 PM WDIO.com

The UMD student recovering from frostbite underwent another amputation surgery on Tuesday.

Alyssa Lommel's mother, Teri, posted on CaringBridge that doctors were unable to save any of her fingers, or either thumb.

Teri writes that doctors found more tissue damage than they had expected and had to amputate just below the knuckles of both hands.

She had one surgery earlier this month and had some tips of her toes amputated, as well as a portion of one of her feet.

But there was also good news today, according to Teri.

She says they took less skin than they had originally planned for grafts.

She also said that "her heels looked better than they had expected, and she should be able to put pressure on both heels once they had healed" meaning that "she should be able to walk normally."

Lommel suffered severe hypothermia and frostbite in December after spending the night outdoors in sub-zero temps.
