Firefighters responding to a report of a structure fire in Sawyer County last week found the remains of a snowmobiler who is believed to have crashed into the building.

A caretaker reported the fire on Filter Bay Road in the Town of Round Lake, east of Hayward, at 2:39 a.m. on New Year's Day.  Firefighters found the unoccupied guest home totally engulfed.

According to the Sawyer County Sheriff's Office, firefighters found a burned snowmobile and human remains at the front wall of the residence, which faces Round Lake.

A person in an adjacent residence reported seeing what appeared to be the light of a snowmobile going towards the residence at about 1:30 a.m.  The sheriff's office said the snowmobile tracks appeared to go directly from the lake to the residence.

The sheriff's office said the victim has not been identified.  The remains were taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's facility in Minnesota.
