ATLANTA, Mich. (AP) — Officers are investigating the poaching of an elk in Michigan's northeastern Lower Peninsula.

The state Department of Natural Resources says the large bull elk was killed in late December just north of Atlanta in Montmorency County.

The carcass was spotted near Decheau Lake Road and Meaford Road. Some of its body parts had been removed.

Conservation officers at the DNR's Gaylord Operation Center are asking the public for tips.

Elk poaching is punishable by fines of up to $2,500, restitution to the state of up to $1,500, confiscation of the firearm used to kill the animal and loss of hunting privileges for up to three years.

The Gaylord Operations Center phone number is 989-732-3541. The state's 24-hour Report All Poaching number is 800-292-7800.
