Mich. Churches Win Injunction in Health Care Case

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A federal appeals court has granted Michigan's Catholic churches a temporary halt to the contraception coverage mandate in President Barack Obama's health care law.

MLive.com reports a 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel voted 2-1 in an order Tuesday to grant a preliminary injunction against government enforcement of the mandate pending a full appeal.

The Michigan Catholic Conference and Catholic Charities say the mandate in the Affordable Care Act violates constitutional protections for religious freedom.

The 6th Circuit decision was one of several rulings issued by federal judges before the start of the new year, including U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who decided late Tuesday to block implementation of the contraceptive coverage requirement.

Government officials have until Friday to respond to Sotomayor's emergency stay.
