The Superior boys have been bitten by the injury bug early and often.
"It's been tough. I don't think we've played with a full roster since the first game of the season," said Jason Kalin, Superior head coach.
Junior forward Daniel Burger fell victim to a broken thumb a couple of weeks ago.
"It's not fun. I'd much rather be out on the ice," Burger said. "But you know, you just gotta work with it, make the best of it I guess."
Burger can't do any stickwork, but he's not taking time off from the team.
"I try to lead still. More vocally, but still in practice, working hard, skating," Burger said. "I like to be here with the boys just to show them that I'm still here. It's good to keep my legs, keep them in shape."
With several players out of commission, Kalin has gotten creative to fill in the gaps.
"We've had to really revamp our lines and try to find a fit," Kalin said. "And then we have a lot of young guys that we're trying to get into areas that they're not normally used to."
"We're a small, speedy team. We rely on passing, creativity, instead of physicality," said Aaron Miller, senior forward.
Miller is one of the Spartan captains trying to get this young team on the winning track.
"Rough start right now, hopefully we pick it up throughout the season and get better toward playoffs," Miller said.
Scoring is a strong point for Superior. They've tallied 26 goals in their last three games.
"We have a lot of offensive power. That's always nice," Burger said. "We have a lot of returning lines from last year so it's nice to have that chemistry."
The Spartans would like to shore up their play in the defensive zone, which Kalin says is happening slowly but surely.
"We're seeing some positive growth in the last couple of games," Kalin said. "We just hope we can get through the Xhristmas break with a couple of more victories and get ready for the next year."
With an opportunity to rest and recover over the holidays, the new year could be a chance for the Superior squad to start fresh.
