Created: 12/24/2013 11:57 AM WDIO.com

ASHLAND, Wis. (AP) — A slow-churning storm has dumped more than 30 inches of lake-effect snow in northwestern Wisconsin.

The National Weather Service reports 31.5 inches of snow in Ashland. Benoit has recorded 22 inches.

The snow was dumped on the Chequamegon Bay region from early Sunday morning through Monday afternoon.

Residents are calling it the biggest snowfall in years. Even forecasters are amazed.

Meteorologist Mike Stewart at the National Weather Service in Duluth, Minn., tells The Daily Press (http://bit.ly/1cOrdsC ), "It's just snowed and snowed and snowed."

Ashland Police Chief Greg BeBeau reports no major traffic issues. About six accidents are reported in Ashland County.

The snowfall appeared to be winding down by Monday afternoon. But a new weather system may bring another 3 to 5 inches to the area by Christmas.
