Ashland Police will recommend first-degree homicide and attempted homicide charges for a 14-year-old male who allegedly shot and stabbed a relative Monday evening.

Police released the details at a press conference Friday afternoon. Police Chief Greg Bebeau said William Saari and his wife were raising the boy, but a normal, quiet night ended in tragedy.

“It was a very gruesome, disturbing crime scene. Things we don't like to encounter on this job,” Bebeau said.

He said preliminary reports show 52-year-old William Saari died from several gunshot and stab wounds.

Police responded to a home on Cary Street in Ashland Monday night about 9 p.m. Police said officers encountered a woman in stockings frantic on the street. She told the officers her husband was being stabbed in the home.

Captain Jim Gregoire said the incident spilled out the front door as officers approached.

"Mr. Saari came out of the house staggering. A shot was heard from behind him by the officers. Mr. Saari then fell over obviously from his injuries,” Gregoire said.

He said a veteran officer then exchanged gunfire with a 14-year-old male. Gregoire said the officer and suspect each fired twice without hitting anyone at the scene.

Gregoire said the suspect then retreated into the home and police heard another gunshot from inside.

“The suspect then exited the rear of the house onto the deck where officers gave commands that he obeyed and he was taken down and handcuffed and given medical attention,” Gregoire said.

He said the suspect's injury was a self-inflicted gunshot to the stomach. Police said the suspect received medial attention in Duluth. However the suspect was later transferred to a detention center in Wisconsin, and he is being held on a $250,000 bond.

Police said the officer involved in the shooting is on administrative leave. Police still have no motive for the incident, but formal charges are expected next week.
