A normal school day has resumed at Lincoln Park Middle School after the school was locked down for a half hour this morning, said a Duluth Public Schools spokesperson.

Duluth police said a parent of a student at Lincoln Park Middle School called 911 before 8:30 a.m. The parent said her kid was angry and said he was going to bring a gun to school.

Police notified school officials and the middle school was put on lockdown.

Officers stopped the bus the suspect was riding on and searched it. All students exited the bus. No weapon was found.

The suspect was taken to police headquarters and his home was searched. Police said they found a BB gun inside the home.

At that point, the school was reopened and the suspect was released to family.

Spokesperson Katie Kaufman said the school was locked down at 8:30 a.m. and the regular school day resumed around 9:00 a.m.

Kaufman also said parents were notified with an automated call after 9 a.m. She said it was sent out as soon as possible. Kaufman said responding to the incident is the first priority.

Viewers posted on our Facebook page responding to the lockdown.

One viewer said, "the automated call was definitely a little late and too vague."

Another viewer said, "the police did exactly what they are suppose to do, as well as the school."

We checked to see how other Northland districts handle parent notification in emergency situations.

"If it is an actual emergency, let's say there was a bomb threat at one of our schools, we have a system called School Messenger," District Administrator Janna Stevens said.

The system was similar to Duluth's. It sends out an automated call to parents.

"It goes out immediately, unless the phone lines are bogged down, it goes out instantly," Stevens said.

The Hermantown School District has a system that sends out notifications via E-mail, text or phone. E-mails and texts are sent immediately. Phone calls can take a little longer.

Up on the range, the Hibbing School District sends out recorded telephone messages.
