Last season is one the Hayward-Spooner girls will always remember. They took home the first state championship in program history.

Head coach Scott Turnbull saw the team's success bring communities together. It also raised the bar for this year's team.

"The girls began a new tradition of excellence, of winning, and also along the lines of that, raised their level of expectations for themselves, and as coaches we've raised the level of expectations for the entire program," Turnball said.

The Hurricanes are still riding the wave of that championship season. But with a younger team this year, they know it'll take even more hard work and discipline to defend their title.

"There's kind of some pressure, but then again we're doing all the same things that we did last year and working just as hard if not harder," said Leandra Aldoff, senior left wing.

Aldoff says more is expected of young skaters now.

"We do have to learn our roles, each player does," Aldoff said. "We're adjusting pretty well so far. We just have to get used to playing with each other."

"Nobody is better than anybody. We all have our different strengths to incorporate into the team," said Harley Kinney, Hurricanes sophomore center.

Kinney is new to the team this year. She makes the commute from Ashland everyday for practice.

"The competition, the team, the atmosphere," Kinney said. "It's serious, and we're competitive. They're really welcoming, that's always good with a new team."

During practice, senior center Cheyenne Turnbull says the Hurricanes are fun but fierce.

"We have a lot of battle drills that we do and other fun stuff, but it's all integrated into the game somehow," Turnbull said. "So it's either really hard work, or learning the systems and power play and stuff."

Coach Turnbull think the Hayward-Spooner squad has the potential to be back in the playoff mix.

"We've got a great group of young ladies and the work ethic is tremendous this season," he said.
