In three weeks, the critical supplemental draft EIS for PolyMet Mining will be released. In advance of this, PolyMet leaders are drumming up support for their project.

Chief Administrative Officer Joe Scipioni spoke at a Laurentian Chamber luncheon on Thursday. He said those opposing the project will be upping their lobbying efforts around this time as well.

Some of the opposition groups formed a coalition called "Mining Truth" earlier this year. Billboards and TV ads have been part of their push.

The company has launched its own public awareness campaign called "Go PolyMet." Scipioni said that people can go on the website and find answers to all kinds of questions about the project.

After the supplemental draft EIS comes out, public comment periods will follow. Scipioni said the company hopes to have support from business leaders during that time.

PolyMet plans on mining the minerals near Babbitt, and processing them at the old LTV site in Hoyt Lakes. As the timeline stands now, they expect to begin construction about a year from now, with actual start up in 2016.

Scipioni said that in recent weeks, hundreds of investors have toured the plant site. He also mentioned that he has two heart stents made out of cobalt, which means this type of mining is literally close to his heart.
