Late October is usually time to bust out the blaze orange. But some anglers aren't ready to reel in their lines.
Executive Director Paul Strapon brought the Musky Fly Fishing World Championships to Northwest Wisconsin, where fishing is a way of life.
"The warm water fishery here is in great shape," Strapon said. "We'd like to share it. We want to get more people out here fly fishing and promote it."
Local businesses stepped up to sponsor the event, and Treelands Resort stayed open an extra two weeks to serve as the tournament's home base.
"We're excited. We've never had anything like a world flying fishing championship here before so it's a nice change of pace and a whole new group of anglers we're never seen in house," said Tatum Treland of Treelands Resort.
The world championships drew about 50 anglers, all eager to seek out the elusive musky.
"You've got people from all over the country here at this and most of them are professional fly fishermen," said Eric Hauser from Chicago. "People want to win the competition. People want to catch the big fish."
Fishermen fought the cold to land some whoppers. Ben Bosworth took the individual prize with a 42-pound musky.
"When you actually get to catch one of these critters, see them and touch them, it's nice," Strapon said.
The tournament had a competitive edge, but Strapon wants the event to be about more than that going forward.
"I would like to fund a scholarship for a Hayward high school graduate who is going into either fisheries or forestry and UW-Stevens Point," Strapon said. "This is about fellowship, fun, helping some folks out."
