Cloquet, Minn. - It wasn't a school day at Churchill Elementary last Saturday, but you could say kids and adults had a little phy-ed at the sixth annual Cloquet River Run/Walk. First place or last place, it didn't matter. Just competing was the way to get an 'A.' Over 500 people participated, which is the most in the history of the event.
"This community has really embraced running," says co-race chair Yvette Maijala.
"This is a whole community wide initiative and challenge to be out here moving your body and doing great things. My favorite part is just seeing people being proud of themselves," says master of ceremonies Ted Schick.
The 5K race begins and ends at the school, but it between, the course contains a feel for the season of fall.
"It is a great opportunity for the local community to get out and appreciate the St. Louis River and the paths with the beautiful leave color and foliage this time of year," says Maijala.
The 5K is a hybrid course with pavement and gravel and is USA Track and Field certified, attracting some strong runners.
"I heard from a couple of friends in the running community that there were going to be some pretty fast, competitive runners out there and that was what I was kind of expecting," said Adam Doe, the overall winner of the 5K.
What Doe, a native of Cloquet, wasn't expecting was to win. The former St. Scholastica cross country runner crossed over at 17:48. He now lives in Minneapolis, but says he will be back.
"It is a real fun race and I'd imagine I'd try to come back up and try to defend the title," says Doe.
The day also included a one-mile walk. The River Run/Walk raises money for school programs and equipment.
