The Superior boys know how to have a good time. For one practice last week, the Spartans went back to their roots.

"It's "Throwback Thursday" so this is all of our youth jerseys from third grade to eighth grade," said Nick Mehlum, junior quarterback. "Just a little fun to keep it loose."

But make no mistake, these guys know how to get the job done. The Spartans are 6-0. Head coach Bob DeMeyer says the team has earned that record through dedication.

"We've got a lot of great kids, they work hard and they're coachable kids," DeMeyer said. "There's a lot of chemistry and camaraderie and all the things it takes to be successful."

Mehlum thinks camaraderie is also a big part of the Spartan's winning combination.

"The offense, the defense, everybody, we're all friends, and that's huge," Mehlum said. We've gotta be able to trust each other, trust that the guys next to us are gonna do their jobs."

"I think it makes us all happier to be here and work hard everyday when you see it pay off in practice and in the game," said Joey McDonald, senior center.

The Spartans have experienced a setback. Senior running back Aaron Wakefield-Zubiatte suffered a season ending ACL injury two weeks ago. But DeMeyer says he's impressed with how the team has rallied around him.

"He's been out here everyday, he doesn't want anyone to feel sorry for him," DeMeyer said. "He knows that's just one of the risks you take playing any sport. He's a leader, a true competitor and a team player."

Superior's success has earned statewide honors for DeMeyer and Mehlum. Both say the best part of those individual awards is the attention it brings to the team.

"In Superior, we don't really get recognized a lot because we're sort of out of the way up in the northwest part of the state," Mehlum said. "It's nice to get a little recognition."

"For our program it's been a big boost," DeMeyer said.

The Spartans hope consistency and chemistry will bring even more success this season.
