October is the start to another season of awe-inspiring shows from the Lyric Opera of the North (LOON) in Duluth. The season will open with two bite-sized shows - one savory, one sweet. October 3 - 5 you can catch the paring of two unique operas at The Underground in Duluth.
The evening will start in a mining town saloon with Henry Mollicone's Face on the Barroom Floor. The show stars Vicki Fingalson, Marcus McConico and Jeffery Madison.
McConico and LOON Creative Director Sarah Lawrence stopped by Good Morning Northland to talk about the dual shows. McConico says this show is special for him because he experience it when he was starting out years ago.
After a short intermission, this night at the opera takes you to the TV studio for an episode of Julia Child's Bon Appétit, set to music by Lee Hoiby. Emly Lodine starts as the indomitable chef, with assistance from sous-chefs James Sheetz and Drew Autio.
The performances last just over and hour total for both shows with one 15 minute intermission. These bite-sized shows are the perfect way to give this spectacular art from a try.
So, if you're already fan, new to the opera or even an opera-skeptic these shows are just for you. Both Face on the Barroom Floor and Bon Appétit are sung in English, making for a more accessible show to the masses.
Lawrence says these shows are a great opportunity to turn people who are apprehensive of opera into life-long lovers of the art form. She says sometimes people will avoid opera because they're worried they won't understand the language and thus the story line, but these shows take that fear away.
After each night of performances you can help the artists celebrate the start of the season with the Post Show Glow. Join the performers after the show for a sweet treat and something to sip.
Face on the Barroom Floor and Bon Appétit run October 3 - 5 at 7:30 p.m. at The Underground in Duluth. General admission is $28, special seating is $38. CLICK HERE for tickets and more information.
