It's one of the first openers for hunters in Minnesota. The bear hunting season started Sunday and Eyewitness News got some tips from a bear hunting guide based in Willow River.
Hangin Out On A Limb Guide Scotty Taylor headed into the woods with 15-year-old Lilly Schulte Sunday. Taylor has been baiting for 15 days and said he uses things like cookie dough, trail mix and honey.
"Hopefully I'll see something today and get a good shot on one," Lilly Schulte said. "I'm excited."
Schulte has been hunting for three years, but this is only her second time on a search for a bear.
"I think I'll get excited," Schulte said. "A little nervous, but hopefully I'll be able to keep it all down and get a good shot on it."
"Everybody says when that bear comes, there is nothing like it," Taylor said. "It's not like a deer. Your heart is pounding through your chest."
Taylor has been guiding for four years, but he's never actually taken a bear himself. He said he gets more joy watching other people do it.
"I love the smiles on their faces when they get the bear," Taylor said. "I could not wait for her to get here. I couldn't sleep for two nights."
