If you see a lot of activity in the Twin Ports Harbor Wednesday and Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard wants you to know it's only a drill.
The Coast Guard and more than fifty other federal, tribal, state, and local agencies will conduct a full-scale exercise called "Operation Peeking Duck." More than 300 people will participate.
"The incident scenario involves a foreign commercial vessel entering the port of Duluth-Superior that loses propulsion, hits the Blatnik Bridge, and goes on to ground at Bird Island," explained Lt. Jud Coleman. "Then as the exercise unfolds, it will evolve into a security incident," he said.
Officials are emphasizing that the drill is not based on any specific credible threats to the Twin Ports.
The Coast Guard is asking recreational boaters to steer clear of their vessels during the exercises. They're expected to run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. to Noon Thursday.
