A brand new laker sailed into the Twin Ports on Thursday night. And by Friday, she was loaded with coal from Midwest Energy, that's headed to Quebec City.

The Whitefish Bay is Canada Steamship Lines’ second of four new Trillium Class Lakers to begin operating in the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway.

Like all Trillium Class vessels, the Whitefish Bay features the latest engine technology and hull design to increase fuel efficiency and decrease air emissions, double hulls to prevent spills in the event of an accident as well as state-of-the-art cargo handling systems to minimize dust and cargo residue. We went aboard on Friday.

We got to see things like the unique water-tight door down in the bottom of the vessel, which would prevent any water from the unloading area from getting into the highly computerized engine room.

Captain Kent Powell said it's been exciting to have such a vessel with all of the latest technology on-board.

Whitefish Bay will carry other cargoes, like iron ore, as well. Local shipping leaders toured Whitefish Bay on Friday afternoon.
