If you're looking for a show that steps outside your typical musical, look no further than Evita. This smash rock opera will open Thursday, July 18 at The Duluth Playhouse and run through August 4.
The show follows Eva Peron's meteoric rise from obscurity to icon. Class tension, political intrigue and high style mix tells the rags-to-riches story of one of the most powerful and controversial women of the 20th century.
Elias Mokole plays Juan Peron, Eva's dictator husband, in the show. He says pervious operatic roles have prepared him to play a demanding character. However, he says those roles were in other languages and that's where Juan Peron differs. "It's fun to do this in English, where you get an immediate response from some of the things you say," Mokole said.
Mokole acts alongside professional artist Kelly Grussendorf, who plays the role of Eva Person. This will be her return to The Duluth Playhouse stage. Her last show here was as Grizabella in Cats in 2007.
Grussendorf is actually a graduate of UMD and now teaches there. She and Mokole both work at UMD's theatre department. Mokole says it's fun to work on and off stage with her.
"Kelly, my Evita, is so much fun to be on stage with," Mokole said.
The show features the lyrics of Tim Rice and the music of Andrew Lloyd Weber. Evita opens at the Duluth Playhouse July 18 and runs through August 4. Wednesday through Saturday shows start at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees start at 2 p.m.
Opening night, July 18, will host a pre-show reception for the patrons as Evita is the final show of the 12-13 season.
