Smoke from Canadian Fires Reaches Minnesota

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says air pollution monitors across the state are detecting elevated levels of fine particle pollution likely coming from wildfires in Canada.

Authorities report dozens of wildfires burning across northwestern Ontario.  The largest fire, started by lightning on July 3 near Red Lake, is estimated to have burned more than 44 square miles (11,518 hectares) and is still not under control.

The MPCA has not issued an air quality advisory, but said the particle pollution could cause adverse health effects in people who are very sensitive to air pollution.  There may be isolated areas of dense smoke.

Smoke from fires in the Central Plains may reach Minnesota when winds shift on Thursday.

People who want information about how smoke from wildfires affects health can check the Minnesota Department of Health’s Health Hazards of Smoke from Wildfires webpage.

The MPCA also maintains a website with the Current Air Quality Index.
