Opening weekend has dozens of boats hitting the St. Louis River, but shallow water is making some areas hard to navigate. Last year's flood pushed sediment into the river, leaving some spots only two feet deep.
The Coast Guard is not placing some navigational buoys this year because of the unsafe conditions.
Charlie Studuhar says that's bad for business at the Spirit Lake Marina.
"We also rent out pontoon boats here, which we're doubtful we're going to be able to do this year," Studuhar says. "And without the markets we can't send people out with a rental pontoon boat or they're going to be getting into trouble all the time."
St. Louis County Commissioner Chris Dahlberg organized a boat trip to check it out firsthand. He hopes the DNR or flood recovery funding can be used to dredge the river.
