It is almost time for stock car racing in the Northland and members from the WISSOTA tracks talked about their upcoming seasons on Wednesday in Proctor.
'Media Day' was held at Power House Bar and Grill. Tracks represented included Proctor, Hibbing, Grand Rapids, Superior and Ashland. Weather has delayed each track's opening day, but each still plans to open in the month of May.
"Frost is still coming up, the moisture. If you don't have the track prepped correctly and there is still frost coming up, it creates big ruts and in dirt track racing, you want a smooth surface," says Joe Stariha, a promoter at Amsoil Speedway in Superior.
"Obviously, when it is wet, the track can get greasy and slimy and you can even get out and work on them, so that has been the biggest issue," says Mark Fleischer, who is a track announcer.
If the weather cooperates, the season opens at ABC Raceway in Ashland on May 18th, at Hibbing Raceway on May 18th, at Grand Rapids Speedway on May 23rd, at Amsoil Speedway in Superior on May 24th and at Proctor Speedway on May 26th.
Among the highlights on the schedules: Amsoil Speedway hosts the World of Outlaws Late Models on July 5th, Hibbing Raceway hosts UMSS Sprints on July 6th, Proctor Speedway has UMSS Sprints on July 7th, ABC Raceway will host IRA Sprints on July 27th and Grand Rapids Speedway will have the WISSOTA Classic on August 30th and the Thunder in the Pines on September 20th and 21st.
