Live Bait, the 'Old Standby'

With the long Winter and different water conditions, choosing what bait to use on Saturday for the Wisconsin Fishing Opener might require some additional thought. Fishing guide Jim Stroede recommends using live bait, but also having options.

"The old standby forever has been live bait, especially walleye fisherman. Walleye fisherman are huge on live bait and live bait still works and most days, it works the best. But, I never leave the dock anymore with some soft plastic."

This year's opener follows the coldest March on record. Many lakes north of State Highway 64 are mostly or completely covered.

As for attempting to ice fish, Kevin Harter of the Wisconsin DNR says it is legal to do, but extreme caution would be advised and all rules regarding number of lines, size and possession limits would apply. Life jackets would also be recommended.

Plans are still on for 48th Governor's Opener at Lake Namekagon near Cable.
