With heavy spring runoff from melting snow causing water levels to rise in area streams and ditches, St. Louis County Public Works crews are closely monitoring County roads. Conditions are improving. As of Friday, May 3 four roads remain closed due to high water.

Roads closed to traffic due to high water:

  • Munger Shaw Road (County Road 223) in Grand Lake Township, approximately halfway between Seville Road (County Road 694) and U.S. Highway 53. Motorists should use north and south Munger Shaw Road.
  • Fox Farm Road (County Road 266) in Alden Township, approximately five miles east of Pequaywan Road (County State Aid Highway 44) near Paradise Lake.
  • South Townline Road (County Road 442 and Unorganized Township Road 9111) on the South City of Hibbing line is closed between State Highway 73 and the Hingley Road (County Road 965) where the West Swan River is over the road in multiple locations. Traffic may divert around this area east and west on South Townline Road.
  • East Goodell Road (Unorganized Township Road 8157) on the South Angora Township line is closed from County Road 919 to U.S. Highway 53. Traffic may divert around this area east and west on East Goodell Road.

Public Works crews also have identified other County roads that have water on them, but are still considered passable. Signs have been put up at these locations identifying there is water on the roadway. Motorists are urged to use caution.

  • Sunset Lake Road (County Road 869) just east of Bear Trap Road (County Road 872) in Industrial Township.
  • County State Aid Highway 8 between Alborn Junction Road (County Road 570) and the BNSF Railroad Crossing west of County Road 570 in Culver Township.
  • Eklund Road (County Road 857) just west of County State Aid Highway 31 in Culver Township.
  • Erickson Road (County Road 729) just south of Swan lake Road (County State Aid Highway 47) in New Independence Township.
  • Three Lakes Road (County State Aid Highway 49) between Munger Shaw Road (County State Aid Highway 15) and County State Aid Highway 4.
  • West Pine Drive (County Road 851) near Stoney Brook in Arrowhead Township.
  • Hermantown Road (County Road 846) approximately half mile east of the Munger Shaw Road in Solway Township.
  • Comstock Lake Road (Unorganized Township Road 9230) approximately 10 miles east of Cotton.
  • Pioneer Road (County State Aid Highway 40) approximately half mile east of Lakewood Road at two locations in Normanna Township.
  • Harnell Road (County Road 881) just north of Seville Road in Grand Lake Township.
  • Sassas Road (County Road 512) approximately half mile north of Leander Road in Owens Township.

Public Works crews will continue to monitor these and other roads throughout the County, however motorists should remember that road conditions and water depth can change rapidly. Anyone who encounters a dangerous road condition is asked to call 9-1-1.

Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office reminds people to use caution around – and to keep children away from – areas of flowing water. Unseen culverts can pose a danger or drowning hazard.
