MIT aeronautics student, 25-year-old Vinnie Surges, was locked down after a campus officer was killed by the people allegedly behind the Boston Marathon bombings.

"They said public transit is down, the taxi service has been suspended," Surges said. They encouraged everyone to stay indoors." The lockdown has since been lifted, as one suspect has been killed and the other is in custody.

But the experience also showed him something besides brutality: the power of community.

"Really seeing everyone put aside any differences they might have for the sake of helping each other has really made a big difference in terms of respecting that there is still a lot of good in this city and in this world," Surges said.
