Grand Rapids, Minn. - They were seconds away from their season ending, but the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks weren't quite ready to pack up their pads. With one more win on Thursday...they'll qualify for state and you can watch them try to do just that on WDIO/WIRT-TV.
Grand Rapids reached the Section 7AA Finals with a come from behind 2-1 victory in Double Overtime over Elk River last Saturday at Amsoil Arena. Avery Peterson's goal with 10 seconds to go in the third period tied it and he would also score the game winner in the second overtime. Now, top seeded Duluth East awaits.
"We stick together and I don't know how to put it, but we are so tightly-knit and everybody is in a battle and everytime they go out there, it is for the guy next to them and not just themselves," says Goaltender Hunter Shepard.
"We have a great group of guys and have been lucky enough to play in two State Tournaments in Peewees and Bantams. It is more of like a family than a team and just a great group of guys and hopefully, we can pull together for one more chance here," says Center Avery Peterson.
These teams met back on January 10th with the 'Hounds winning 2-1. The rematch is Thursday night at Amsoil Arena with a section championship and spot at state on the line. The puck drops at 7:30 pm, but televised coverage begins at 7:00 pm with a pre-game show.
