DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team jumped out to a 3-0 lead on its way to a 4-2 victory over Bridge Rival University of Wisconsin-Superior in game one of the NCHA Peters Cup quarterfinals Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
The Saints took a 1-0 lead early when Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) scored just after a UWS penalty had expired five minutes and 50 seconds into the game. Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) and Eric Kraft (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS (Lake Superior State) ) had the assists. CSS outshot the 'jackets 13-7 in the period.
Superior would pick up a five-minute major for spearing and game misconduct midway through the second period and the Saints took advantage. Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) scored one goal for St. Scholastica with Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial HS (Brooks-AJHL) ) credited with the assist. Tyler Miller (Fort Frances, Ontario/Rainy River HS (Thunder Bay-SIJHL) ) also scored on the same power-play to give CSS a 3-0 lead at the second intermission. Brenden Kotyk (Regina, Saskatchewan/Michael A. Riffel HS (Dauphin-MJHL) ) and Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) had the assists.
It remained 3-0 until the Saints were called for a five-minute major with 11 minutes left in the third period. CSS killed off most of the penalty, but the Yellowjackets broke through when Jeff Forsythe scored to make it 3-1 with seven minutes remaining.
The 'jackets kept it going as Michael Rey scored with 4:34 left to make it a 3-2 game. However, with less than a minute to play, Garet Chumley (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS (Jersey-EJHL) ) intercepted an outlet pass by the goaltender, went in one-on-one and put the puck into the back of the net to make the final score 4-2.
The win by St. Scholastica snaps a six-game winless streak against UWS at Mars Lakeview Arena. Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) made 32 saves to earn the win for the Saints, while Drew Strandberg had 24 saves in the loss for the 'jackets.
The Saints (12-13-1) and Yellowjackets (11-13-2) will play game two tomorrow night at Mars Lakeview Arena. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. The Saints need at least a tie to advance to the Peters Cup semifinals. A UWS win means a 20-minute mini-game will be played right after game two.
