Saving Water, Money with Splash Campaign

Water is something we use and need everyday, and the city of Duluth is unique in that we get all of our supply from the big, blue resource we live on--Lake Superior.
And that's got the attention of several organizations like the Clean Energy Resource Team (CERT) and the city of Duluth. They're launching a new program called the Splash Campaign.
Bill Mittlefehldt, CERT Director for the Northeast Coordinator, said Duluth, just by virtue of having the lake, is a port of possibility for savings.
"We are connected literally to the lake and the lake is in us. So working metaphorically with our valued resource, the lake, and all it's magic and power, we are going to us savings of fresh water to stimulate what the Mayor calls the prosperity agenda," Mittlefehldt said.
That agenda by Duluth Mayor Don Ness includes making savings in water, energy, money and environmental emissions.
"The money we've save... are all assets that we think citizens are going to reinvest in our community, and that's going to help us find prosperity in a challenging 21st century," Mittlefehldt said.
In order to save that money, CERT and those other partners are offering energy-savings tools for free or at a deeply discounted price.
Minnesota Power is mailing out faucet aerators and efficient shower heads for free. Meanwhile Comfort Systems is offering packets of custom tools like a pre-rinse spray valve for businesses that use high amounts of water in a day.
"If you're a restaurant, a lodging facility, hotel, hospital or nursing home and using lots of water, we're going to help you save a lot of money," he said.
Mittlefehldt said if citizens take advantage of these savings, Duluth could be a model for other cities on water conservation.
