Instead of the end of January, the 2013 John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon will now begin in March.
The new start date is March 10. Race Coordinator and President of the Board Pat Olson said that they made the decision Monday night.
"The rain killed the trail. And we need more snow. So we're hoping and gunning for enough snow for the March 10th race date. We picked that date because there are races every weekend until then," she said.
"We had to cancel last year because of conflicts with the vet crew. This year, we had that in mind, and have planned further ahead," she added.
The board is in constant communication with the mushing teams, so they can make other travel plans if they're coming from out of town.
Billie Diver, of Cloquet, told us that she definitely still plans on being in the race. She's a nursing student at UND, and said the new date is during her mid-terms. "It will be stressful, but I keep looking at the positive. I'll have more time to train now," she said over the phone.
Blake Freking and his wife Jennifer planned on participating in three of the races. "Of course we are disappointed, since the Beargrease is our main event. We understand that the board made that decision based on safety concerns of mushers and dogs."
The Finland couple have signed up for another event over the March 10th timeline, so they are unsure at this point if they will still participate in the Beargrease.
Registration for the race has been re-opened through February 28th.
