Ice is forming in the greater Duluth/Superior Harbor region. U.S. Coast Guard Cutter ALDER, and several local tugs, will conduct ice breaking operations to facilitate the movement of commercial shipping throughout the twin ports.
This activity will extend to the end of the shipping season which normally concludes on January 16.
All snowmobile, All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) operators, and other recreational users of the ice should avoid shipping channels, plan their activity carefully, and use caution near the ice. Ice fishermen, especially, should use caution when placing their ice shacks in proximity to the shipping channels.
