For skiers and snowboarders across the Northland, winter is finally here. Spirit Mountain opened three runs Friday afternoon.
Last year's mild winter cut the season on the slopes short. Many skiers and snowboarders are hoping this year will be better.
"Last season was kind of a disappointment," said Spirit Mountain Executive Director Renee Mattson. "The temperatures just didn't cooperate with us and there was no natural snow on the ground. People weren't on the mindset to get out for winter sports."
This year is already looking better to some.
"It's already started out so much better than last year," said season pass holder Marba Pogue. "It opened earlier and with more snow."
Mattson said skiers and snowboarders are "chomping at the bit" and this season is already looking better than the last. Spirit Mountain also has a few new additions this year. A new express lift opened Friday with the slopes and a new chalet at the bottom of the hill is set to open in January.
"It gives us really good access for people without their own transportation," said Mattson. "We're on the public bus system there, you can get dropped off right by our door."
Spirit Mountain also dropped their ticket prices this year.
