The city of Virginia is now officially under new leadership. Mayor Louis Russo was sworn in on Tuesday night.
Russo is taking over for former Mayor Steve Peterson who's stepping down to focus on his work with the IRRRB.
Russo has been a Virginia city councilor for more than 17 years, and didn't seek re-election in November. He said he was almost ready to step away from city politics, but couldn't say no to this.
"It's an honor and kind of humbling to know that [councilors] almost unanimously approached me," Russo said.
Russo said his focus for the next two years will fall on legacy problems which the city has been tackling over the years.
"We've got streets that have got to be repaired. And like every other city in the state of Minnesota, although we probably don't have it quite as bad as some, is the shortage of cash," he said.
Russo was appointed during a special meeting last week. Interim Mayor Larry Cuffe had been serving for the last month.
