CAIRO (AP) — A top Hamas official says Friday's shooting incident along Israel's border with Gaza won't affect the cease-fire that took effect two days ago.
Israeli troops today fired on Gazans who were surging toward a border fence, killing one person. A Gaza health official says 19 others were wounded by Israeli fire.
Israel's military says about 300 Palestinians approached the security fence at different points, trying to damage it and cross into Israel. The military says soldiers fired warning shots in the air, and after the Palestinians refused to move back, troops fired at their legs.
In one incident captured by Associated Press video, several dozen Palestinians approached the fence and came close to a group of Israeli soldiers, Some appeared to be taunting them.
During the incidents, Hamas security tried to defuse the situation and keep the crowds away from the fence.
