NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Kenyans are expressing outrage over what has become a common move by the country's members of parliament - to award themselves hefty pay perks even though the average Kenyan lives on only $5 a day.
The legislators last week quietly awarded themselves a $110,000 bonus for five years of service in parliament.
Several dozen Kenyans protested outside parliament on Tuesday. They shouted "thieves" and waved posters urging the president not to approve the pay bonus.
Kenya's 222 legislators currently make about $120,000 a year, one of the highest pay packages in the world when compared to what the lawmakers' constituents make.
Millions of Nairobi residents live in slums with no running water.
