A married couple from Forest Lake, Minn. apparently drowned in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness over the weekend.
Two passing canoeists found the bodies of Thomas Pineault, 55, and Cynthia Pineault, 51, floating in Alton Lake along with a capsized canoe on Sunday afternoon. Alton Lake is northwest of Sawbill Lake and north of Tofte.
Authorities believe the bodies were in the water for 24 hours or longer. Foul play is not suspected.
The Cook County Sheriff's Office recovered the bodies with assistance from the U.S. Forest Service and Cook County Search and Rescue. The Minnesota State Patrol and Sawbill Outfitters also assisted in the response.
The sheriff's office said the area was subject to high winds and much cooler temperatures late last week, creating difficult conditions for canoeing.
