Trash to Training Wheels: Man Fixes Bikes for Kids

A Twin Ports area man spends his free time fixing old bikes for kids. It all started when Mike visited a landfill after his mother's basement flooded this summer. There, he noticed perfectly good bikes, needing just minor repairs.

That's when he decided to collect old bikes and fix them up. He has about seventeen in his garage and most only needed a new tube or brakes. It's an act he said costs him just a little cash, but could mean much more to a family in need.

“I know when my kids were growing up they always wanted bikes,” Mike said. “Go to the store right now and check the price of bikes. People aren't working. You get these bikes for free.”

Mike finds kids who need bikes mostly by word of mouth, but soon he will be giving out several free bikes at a public place in Hermantown. A date has not been set.
