Three Lake county residents announced Thursday that they are paddling to St. Paul to raise awareness about proposed precious metals mining projects in northern MN.

The Precious Waters Canoe Flotilla is a month long canoe trip from the Superior National Forest to the State Capitol along the Partridge and Mississippi Rivers.

The core relay team have invited the public to join them along their route by canoe or to meet up with the Flotilla at events along the way.

The Flotilla will arrive in St. Paul for a rally at the Capitol on October 22. The mission of the Flotilla is to raise awareness and share information about proposed mineral prospecting and copper-sulfide mining projects in northeast Minnesota and their potential impacts; examine the ability of state and federal regulatory agencies to protect our natural resources; and further an open dialogue about sustainable economic alternatives for northern MN communities.

Flotilla paddlers and speakers will gather in communities along the route to host community discussions about sulfide mining in MN. Daily updates throughout the trip will be posted on the Precious Waters Flotilla facebook page.

"We are for the water and the people. Jobs and the environment. We can have both," said Flotilla paddler Elli King.
