BEIRUT (AP) - At least three people are reported dead -- and possibly as many as 18 -- in an explosion targeting Syrian regime forces in northern Syria today.

The explosion came amid rising violence ahead of a visit by the new envoy for the U.N. and the Arab League.

There are conflicting accounts of the blast. A human rights group based in Britain says a car bomb exploded, killing 18 security agents.

But a government official in Syria says a suicide attacker blew himself up, killing two policemen and a civilian.

The attack comes three days after a blast in the northern city of Aleppo destroyed parts of two hospitals where soldiers are usually treated. State media said 30 civilians were killed.

Activists are reporting heavy fighting between government troops and rebels today in Aleppo, Syria's largest city. Much of it is taking place near the airport, which is held by the government and includes a military base.
