The ArcelorMittal unions have presented a comprehensive proposal to the company which they feel they could recommend to its members.
Thousands of those members did a practice picket at all of the ArcelorMittal facilities in the country Wednesday, including Minorca Mine in Virginia.
The unions said they are waiting for the company to respond to the latest proposal, which addresses the retiree health care and pension issues.
They had hoped to be wrap up negotiations yesterday. But still no deal yet. The old contract expired on Saturday. The unions have agreed to keep working during negotiations.
The unions met with the company Thursday morning, and are waiting to hear back.
Cliffs Natural Resources and their unions from Hibbing Taconite, United Taconite, and the two mines in Michigan will be going back to the negotiating table on October 8th. And the talks will be in Duluth, not Pittsburgh.
Local union presidents said it's the soonest the two sides could arrange to get together again. They have agreed to an indefinite extension of the old contracts, which expired September 1st.
Meanwhile, Minntac's employees will be hearing about their tentative agreement in three meetings coming up at Miners Memorial in Virginia:
Monday, September 10th: 7:30am and 7:30pm
Tuesday, September 11th: 3:30pm
Local 1938 President Mike Woods said that folks will be receiving a packet with a ballot in the coming weeks.
