A Bayfield County woman died after apparently falling off a 90-foot cliff while pruning branches.
Jane Stamstad, 60, lived along Lake Superior on State Highway 13 in the Town of Bayview, midway between Washburn and Bayfield. A friend called authorities Tuesday to report that she hadn't seen Stamstad in several days. She visited Stamstad's home and found her car, purse, and cell phone, but no sign of the missing woman.
Bayfield County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the home Tuesday afternoon and observed lawn and garden tours near the cliff, a tree pruner about five feet over the ledge, and a number of newly-pruned branches. After climbing about halfway down the cliff, deputies were able to see Stamstad's body in the lake.
Authorites have determined the death was accidental.
