Duluth, MN --- Darren Danielson has been named the Anchor of Eyewitness News at Six and Ten on WDIO/WIRT-DT. The announcement was made Tuesday by Eyewitness News Director, Steve Goodspeed.

“Darren comes to us with almost 25 years of broadcast journalism experience. We feel very fortunate to have him join us. Living and working here, he knows our communities well and the background behind the stories,” Goodspeed said. “Darren is a respected reporter, producer and anchor.”

For the past 14 years, Danielson has been the co-anchor of Almanac North, a live, weekly public affairs program on Duluth’s Public Broadcast station, WDSE-TV.

“I am honored, excited and humbled to become part of the Eyewitness News team,” Danielson said. “I am thrilled at the opportunity to work at the station and help carry on the tradition others have established there.”

Danielson said he and Dennis Anderson have been in Kiwanis together since 1988 and he considers the long-time news anchor a friend and mentor. Anderson is retiring this spring and Danielson said Anderson encouraged him to consider the position.

“That encouragement meant the world to me,” Danielson said. “I know I can’t replace Dennis Anderson, but I promise to bring to the position the traits he brought us every night—honesty, integrity, objectivity and fairness.”

Goodspeed echoed those sentiments. “It was important to us to bring someone on board who represents the same values and standards that Dennis brought to the job.”

Anderson said he was happy for Danielson and he was sure he would do well. “He will hit the ground running,” Anderson said. “Darren has been on the air here for more than 20 years. He is a wonderful choice because he already knows so much about the people and the issues of the Northland.”

Danielson’s journalism in the region and knowledge of the area go back to his days at KDLH-TV. From 1986 to 1991, Danielson was the Anchor and Producer for the 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts. His work there ranged from reporting on local events of the day to traveling with area firefighters to battle forest fires in western Idaho.

Danielson began his journalism career in 1981 as a general assignment reporter in Minot, North Dakota at KMOT-TV. There he also had the chance to take on every task a newsroom has to offer, including assignment editor, photographer and video editor. He eventually became the Anchor and Producer of the evening newscasts and later was named News Director as well.

It was in Minot that Danielson met his wife, Vicki. They have been married 23 years and have two teen-aged children.

Danielson graduated from Brown College, formerly the Brown Institute of Broadcasting, in 1981. He was born in Waupaca, Wisconsin.

Since 2002, Danielson has been an investment advisor at the Duluth office of McGladrey, Inc., a national accounting and business-consulting firm.

For Danielson, free time includes playing guitar, bike trips with his son, board games with the family, fishing trips, helping out at church, and taking his daughter to the annual Father/Daughter ball in Duluth.

Danielson begins his anchor duties on Thursday, May 26.
